After a few days of being here in Barcelona our class ventured out of town for our first excursion. Saturday morning we were up early to meet around nine o’clock where we took an hour bus ride to the Southwest of Barcelona. In the countryside of Catalonia, we entered the El Penedes wine region. The El Penedes wine region encircles Barcelona in the North and Tarragona in the south, creating beautiful views. We were dropped off at the winery Celler Eudald Massana.
As we stepped off the bus I was blown away by the immediate beauty of the winery. We were greeted by Albert, our tour guide who took us on the grounds of the winery. We started off by learning the steps of vinification. Going over the process we learned the cycle of harvesting grapes and various techniques used throughout the years to have a successful winery. Albert also explained the history of wine-making teaching us its stretch over millennia. We were then taken inside where we saw the process of packaging the wine. The cellars of wine were incredible!
After the tour was over, we had a stand up lunch outside. Our lunch consisted of various tapas that were delicious. We also had a wine tasting! We drank two different wines out of a wine pitcher porron. This was so fun! Since I have never done this before Albert showed us!
I loved this whole experience. This has been one of the most interesting sights and excursions I have ever seen.
After the winery we got back on the bus and traveled to the town of Sitges. Sitges had appeared as if it was straight out of a movie! Sitges is a coastal town in the Catalonia region where the sea meets the mountains it was something I will never forget.
We went on a tour of the city where we learned a lot about the history, saw cathedrals, walked through shops, and of course saw the beautiful beaches. We then had some free time where we had empanadas and ice cream!
Traveling through Catalonia was a beautiful day. I was feeling extremely grateful to be here and I definitely want to go back to Sitges before our three weeks end!
