While this trip has been extremely education, not one second of it has felt like formal education, which I believe is all related to the value of studying abroad! Today we had our last lecture by Josep Ortega, the founder and creative director of Kings of Mambo.
I really enjoyed learning about his career development because I felt that is was very natural. He did not enter college with the intention of studying in the field he now works in, which I believe happens quite frequently.
Josep explained how the evolution of his career was closely related to the advancements in technology that happened around the time he began working. While his goal was to become a war photographer, adobe photoshop opened many more doors for him in digital design.
As a person who would like to own my own business one day, I enjoyed hearing Josep’s perspective on starting and running a business. His team is small, with only 8 people, though their value makes the team very functional.
They are multidisciplinary, which means they can all do it all. I think this is important to consider when building a team for a business, for it allows people to jump around depending on the project.
I also found it interesting when Josep described how Kings of Mambo creates identification of companies. I think this is a brilliant first step for a successful company, for it creates identifiable features for people to know and remember the company by.
The projects he shared were very interesting – definitely designs that would catch my eye if I were scrolling through Google! I think Josep Ortega’s business model and approach are very valuable to take away as a member of a team or when creating a team. So much great information!
