After a few days getting acclimated in Barcelona, we ventured out of the city for a bit and into the most beautiful wine region in coastal town.

After a one-hour bus ride, we entered the El Penedes Wine Region, an area in Catalonia sweeping all the way up from the mountains and down to the Mediterranean Sea. At the winery, Celler Euldald Massana, we were taken on a brief town of one small section of the vineyard. Our tour guide, Albert, explained the one-year cycle of harvesting grapes for wine, as well as all of the gadgets and adaptations that have come from making wine over the years. We were then taken inside to tour the cellars and were walked through the process from grape, to bottle, to selling. As we walked through each room, I was enthralled by the mechanisms that have been created to increase efficiency in the fermentation and packaging of the wine. Each room was so beautiful, holding so much character and history.

After our tour, we had a traditional Spanish meal of tapas, which were absolutely incredible.
We were also able to try two of the winery’s wines out of a parron, which is a bottle with a spigot that is used to pour wine into your mouth. The entire experience felt very authentic, not to mention it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

We then headed over to the coastal town of Sitges. This was hands down one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Between the crystal clear water and the white streets, I was in complete awe. We went on a walking tour of the town where we learned about the history of Sitges, which included beautiful theaters, cathedrals, and even a little lesson on Bacardi. After out tour, we were given a few free hours in the city where we tried some local restaurants, walked through the streets, stopped in several shops, and took in the views of the ocean. I definitely see myself returning to Sitges one day – it is a city I will never forget. This excursion really demonstrated the beauty of Catalonia and the rich culture that coincides with this.
