On May 16th we first went to the modernism museum which was very interesting. On the first floor there was a few paintings and mainly hand-crafted furniture, which looked really nice. What makes it a modernism museum are pieces from the early 20th century that have a more modern look then regular museums. We then went downstairs and there was a bunch of sculptures painted to look like wood which was also very interesting. My favorite piece at the modernism museum was the four seasons stain glass windows inspired by Japanizes portraiture.

Later on in the day we had Castellers training session. If you don’t know what Casteller is, it is the sport of human stacking. They have tournaments every two years to see which Casteller club is the greatest at stacking. Besides a big tournament they also have regular games, and they also stack at Catalonian festivals. During their practices they really don’t stack that high, but they stack about five people high. During festivals, games and tournaments they stack to about 8 to 10 people high.

A quatre de vuit means that the tower has eight layers of four people on each one. When the layers are being counted you must include the pinya as the first layer. They pinya is the very bottom layer and will have a lot of people to support the tower. When a tower is being constructed it will resemble a tree trunk like structure. You have a majority of people on the first three layers to support the people climbing and balancing toward the top of the tower.
