JOHN W.

How did you first start getting into collecting vinyl records?

My dad gave me his collection of his old rock & metal LPs, and I started building my own collection from there.

What was the first record you ever owned?

If you mean bought with my own money… Green Day’s “American Idiot”.

How many records do you have in your collection?

Per Discogs, I have 2,379 records.

What genres do you collect?

Punk, Ska, Hardcore!

Why do you love collecting vinyl records?

I go to at least a gig or two every week and I’ve always loved listening to music while I’m working at home, and vinyl is just my preferred way to do it. I have a better sound system for that rig compared to my PC speakers & digital tracks. Made a lot of great friends buying and trading over the years too.

What is the most recent record you got for your collection?

“Hurry Up and Wait” by Bite Me Bambi.

Where is your go-to place to look for records in Pittsburgh? And Why?

The Attic in Millvale. Unparalleled selection. Tons of new collections get traded in every week to comb through, so I always find something fresh.

What is your all time favorite record you have in your collection?

Bad Religion – “Suffer” , OG Press.

What is that one record you really want, but don't have yet?

The Broadway musical soundtrack of “American Idiot”, funny enough. Never comes up for sale and when it does, it’s about $300.

Why Vinyl and not CDs or digital?

I have a big CD and digital collection too.

If you could recommend any album, what would it be?

“Everything Goes Numb” by Streetlight Manifesto.
