While wandering Dublin, I stumbled upon a completely free open studio event. I had no expectations going in, but it turned into a vibrant patchwork of artists, styles, conversations, and even a bit of unexpected performance on my end.

The studio was full of creators — photographers, cartoonists, installation artists, even someone who collects old computers and had a Super Nintendo running a vintage Star Wars game (yes, I played it). I also met a performance artist who works with people with disabilities, especially those with memory issues or neurodivergence.

Her work focuses on building impulse-based, unscripted pieces using props and interactive experiences. It was fascinating to hear how performance can be a tool for self-expression when traditional methods aren’t accessible.

One of the most surprising parts of the day was how much I got to talk. I slipped into my Irish dialect (not perfectly — I definitely slipped up a few times), but it gave me a chance to practice. A few artists caught on and asked where I was from. I played it vague — “Visting Dublin, studying in Pittsburgh” — but I think they sensed I wasn’t fully local.

The absolute highlight? A lovely woman asked if I played guitar, and I ended up performing one of my original songs for a small, casual group. She even jokingly offered me “a bit of Dutch courage” — some Prosecco — which I accepted in spirit (though I never actually got the drink, oops). Still, the interaction was warm and affirming. I got her art Instagram, and we talked about creativity, burnout, and finding joy again. That conversation stuck with me.

Oh, and I pet a cat. Priorities. To end the night, I caught a surprise brass band performance and made myself a simple dinner of chicken and spaghetti. After days of early wakeups and packed schedules, sleeping in today felt luxurious. I probably wrecked my sleep schedule… but honestly, totally worth it.

Today started with no set plans — and turned into one of my favorite days so far.
